Florian Wirtz's Confidence Boost: Learning from Liverpool's Battle with Man City! (2026)

A Devastating Loss, Yet a Spark of Inspiration! Even though Liverpool's recent late defeat against Manchester City was a tough pill to swallow for all their devoted fans, a rising star, Florian Wirtz, is finding a surprising source of encouragement within the very fabric of that match.

For the initial 30 minutes of the game, it seemed like Manchester City had the upper hand, dictating the play. However, the Reds managed to weather the storm and gradually found their footing, growing more confident as the game progressed. After the halftime break, Liverpool truly came alive, dominating the proceedings and rightfully earning their lead through Dominik Szoboszlai's spectacular goal. But here's where it gets tricky... the team seemed to run out of steam in the final 10 minutes, leading to a predictable, albeit frustrating, shift in momentum.

Despite this late collapse, Wirtz is focusing on the periods where Liverpool showcased their strength. He shared his perspective with Liverpoolfc.com, stating, "My personal opinion and maybe also a few others agree with me, it’s that we didn’t deserve to lose because we made a good game." He elaborated that while they might not have had complete control in the first half, they also didn't concede many significant chances. "I think we made a quite good game, [won] a lot of duels, especially the second half was good from us. We put pressure on a top team, and I think that we can see that we are in the same [level] and that we compete with top teams."

And this is the part most people miss: Wirtz believes this performance proves they can compete with the best. "That’s what we can take from the game and also [it] gives us [confidence] for the rest of the season [that] we know that we can hurt every team." He's now looking ahead to their next challenge, acknowledging that facing Sunderland won't be easy, but the team is determined to give their all and aim for the three points. "We know it’s going to be physical, so we just try to bring 100 percent on the pitch until the last minute and take hopefully the three points home."

Beyond the Pitch: Wirtz's Physical Transformation

While Liverpool might be experiencing some ups and downs in their points tally, Wirtz's personal performance over the past six weeks has been nothing short of excellent. In his last 11 appearances, he's impressively notched six goals and provided three assists, demonstrating a significant improvement not just in his attacking output but also in his work rate off the ball.

He attributes a part of this remarkable growth to a conscious effort to enhance his physical presence. "I think now I’m already in a better position than I was at the start because I think I got a bit stronger," he explained. "I spent a lot of time in the gym, but it’s also the duels on the pitch and also in training and the extra work after training is helping me."

This dedication to his physique is paying dividends, particularly in the demanding environment of Premier League matches. "It helps me also for the games, especially the Premier League games. I just want to continue to get better and stronger and more powerful. That can only help to be even better." He also finds joy in the intense style of play, stating, "It’s also nice to play this kind of football [that is] intense because I can run, I can fight and I like to bring that on the pitch." It seems his journey to this current peak form has taken some time, but he's far from finished. "It just took me a little time to get where I am now, but I don’t want to stop there."

A Question for You: Do you think focusing on the positive aspects of a loss, as Wirtz is doing, is a more effective strategy for long-term success than dwelling on the negatives? Or is it crucial to dissect every mistake to prevent future occurrences? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
