Hemmes, the CEO of the Merivale hospitality empire, valued at a whopping $3 billion, has been on a property-buying spree in Byron Bay, a popular beach destination. The empire was founded by his parents, John and Merivale Hemmes, as a fashion house before branching into the hospitality industry, where it now boasts over 90 brands.
According to local real estate sources, Hemmes purchased a four-bedroom beach shack on Friday, adding to his already impressive property portfolio in the area. This purchase comes after he acquired two beachfront houses on Belongil Beach for $22 million and $16 million in 2021, and another property on the same stretch for $3.75 million last November.
The $18 million beach shack is a unique two-storey dwelling on a dune, featuring two self-contained studios downstairs and a two-bedroom unit upstairs. The sale was indicated by a 'sold' sticker, but the price and buyer's identity remain undisclosed, with the agents from Sotheby's International Realty Byron Bay declining to comment.
And this is the part most people miss—the property's future. Local sources suggest that Hemmes might demolish the shack to build his dream home, as the land is not suitable for commercial ventures. Interestingly, he will be neighbors with The Block judge Darren Palmer and his husband, Olivier Duvillard, who own a $4.2 million cottage nearby.
