Luka Mijatovic's Mile Swim: A Record-Breaking Performance
Luka Mijatovic, a 16-year-old swimming prodigy, made waves at the 2025 California/Nevada December Sectionals by breaking his own National Age Group (NAG) record in the 1650-yard freestyle event. His time of 14:30.01 not only shaved seven seconds off his previous record but also placed him in the top 2% of all times in NCAA history for his age group. This achievement is even more remarkable considering the 17-18 NAG record holder, Luke Ellis, posted a time of 14:29.48 in 2023, just half a second ahead of Mijatovic's new mark.
Mijatovic's dominance began in April when he set a new NAG record of 14:37.63, breaking Liam Custer's 2020 record by a mere two tenths of a second. His performance tonight was equally impressive, starting with a slightly slower 52-high range split over the first 400 yards, but he maintained a consistent pace throughout, splitting 52s and 53s for the remaining 1200 yards without any 54-second splits.
The young swimmer's success extends beyond the pool. He is a committed member of the Texas team and a key player for the Pleasanton Seahawks. With his current form, Mijatovic is poised to make a significant impact in the swimming world, potentially challenging for the top spot in the NCAA rankings this season. His upcoming schedule includes events such as the 200-yard freestyle, 400-yard individual medley, 200-yard butterfly, 500-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, 1000-yard freestyle, and 200-yard individual medley, further showcasing his versatility and talent.
Mijatovic's performance not only solidifies his place as the fastest 15-16-year-old in the 1650-yard freestyle event but also opens up exciting possibilities for his future in swimming. His ability to consistently break records and challenge established swimmers is a testament to his dedication and skill. As he continues to make waves in the swimming community, Mijatovic is undoubtedly one to watch, with the potential to become a swimming legend.
