The Ocean's Seat at the Table
Imagine a boardroom, a place of power and decision-making, with a unique twist. In a small Scottish town, a marine science organization has taken a bold step by inviting the ocean itself to join their board of trustees. This isn't just a symbolic gesture; it's a radical shift in perspective, one that challenges our traditional understanding of corporate governance.
A New Era of Environmental Consciousness
The Scottish Association for Marine Science (Sams) has a rich history, dating back to the Scottish Enlightenment, a period marked by a growing fascination with oceanography. Yet, the very foundation of this organization reflects an era when nature was viewed as a resource to be dominated and exploited. Nick Owens, the director of Sams, recognizes the need to evolve beyond this outdated mindset.
"We've long believed that our planet is too vast for human actions to have a significant impact. However, recent decades have proven otherwise. Our ethical considerations have largely been human-centric, and it's time to change that," Owens asserts.
Inspired by Indigenous Wisdom
Owens' inspiration draws from his encounters with Indigenous cultures in North America, where he witnessed a deep connection between people and their environment. This inspired him to give the ocean a literal voice at Sams, a decision that has since sparked a global movement.
A Global Movement Takes Shape
Sams isn't alone in this endeavor. Faith in Nature, an eco-beauty manufacturer, pioneered this concept in 2022, becoming the world's first company to grant nature a formal vote on corporate decisions. Today, about 25 organizations across Britain, France, Belgium, the US, and Australia have followed suit. While the numbers are modest, there's a palpable sense of community and determination to refine and strengthen this approach.
Defining the Ocean's Role
Implementing this concept wasn't without its challenges. Sams established a working group to navigate the complexities. Helen Mitcheson, an environmental lawyer and marine science expert, was integral to these discussions. The group defined the ocean as a global entity, encompassing the seabed and certain airspace, but excluding human activities. They also decided that the ocean's voice would be represented by a single individual, with Mitcheson taking on this role initially.
Early Challenges and Aspirations
Mitcheson's first intervention came just 20 minutes into the inaugural meeting, reminding the board to consider the ocean's perspective. While the concept is still being fully integrated, Owens believes it will ensure environmental factors are considered from the outset in all strategic decisions. However, there are potential pitfalls, such as the board rejecting lucrative contracts or staff questioning their engagement with certain industries.
"We must engage with industries to understand their practices and impacts. Our role could be to help minimize these impacts and educate these industries. We'd be objective, transparent, and fact-based in our decisions, which might include not working with certain sectors," Owens explains.
A Step Towards Sustainability
Owens sees this decision as a step towards a more sustainable future for Sams and hopes it will attract philanthropic funding. He believes that while capitalism created the environmental challenges we face, it's also through industry and capitalism that we'll find solutions. He predicts that within a decade, this practice will become commonplace.
"What many people don't realize is that by giving nature a seat at the table, we're not just benefiting the environment; we're also transforming the way we do business. It's a win-win situation, and I'm excited to see how this movement evolves," Owens concludes.
