A Lost Piece of Rock History: Unveiling the Ozzy Tape
The Untold Story of a Jam Session That Could Have Changed Everything
Imagine finding a hidden gem, a piece of music history, in the most unexpected place - an attic. This is exactly what happened when a rare recording, featuring the iconic Ozzy Osbourne, was discovered. But here's where it gets controversial and intriguing...
The only surviving member of the original band, Bob Daisley, shares his unique perspective on this little-known chapter in rock history. Tragically, two of his bandmates, Randy Rhoads and Lee Kerslake, have passed away, leaving Daisley as the sole witness to this untold story.
Rhoads' untimely death in a plane crash, at just 25 years old, adds an extra layer of poignancy to the narrative. Daisley recalls, "It felt destined... I felt like it was meant to be." This sense of destiny is a recurring theme in his recollections.
Daisley, now back in his native Australia, listens to the recording over the phone, and his reaction is immediate and emotional. "That's us! That's Ozzy's voice," he exclaims. The tape captures a moment in time, a jam session from January 1980, before the band had even found their permanent drummer, Kerslake.
But here's the intriguing part: Daisley isn't sure if they were auditioning a drummer or just having some fun. "We had several songs by then," he says, "but this wasn't one of them." These songs would later become the foundation for the legendary album, 'Blizzard Of Ozz', released just nine months later.
Daisley kept meticulous records of his music career, but even he doesn't have anything like this jam session recording. It's a unique snapshot of a moment in time, a glimpse into the creative process of a legendary band.
He remembers their time in Ilketshall vividly. "It was a nice area, with nice people," he says. One memorable moment was the low beams in the farmhouse they stayed in. "Every night, someone would forget and bump their head!" he laughs.
There are few photos from this period, with most official pictures taken later, once the band was complete. But Daisley has two precious photos of Ozzy and Randy, a reminder of those early days.
Daisley was warned about working with Ozzy due to his well-known struggles with alcohol and drugs. "But something told me it was meant to be," he says. And indeed, their collaboration led to some of the most iconic music of the era.
The harmony between the band members didn't last, and Daisley and Kerslake were eventually fired. But the impact of their work together is undeniable. "It can be months, even years, but I do listen back to the music," Daisley says. "It's a reminder of how good we were, and how far our creativity reached."
This story is a reminder that sometimes, the most important moments in music history are the ones that almost happened. It's a tale of destiny, creativity, and the enduring power of music.
