Virginia Tech Eyes In-State TE Recruit: Junior Saunders Official Visit & VT's 2027 Class Push (2026)

Virginia Tech is set to receive an official visit from a highly sought-after in-state recruit, marking a significant development in the football program's recruitment efforts. The Hokies, under the leadership of new head coach James Franklin, have quickly transformed their fortunes, becoming a top-tier team in the 2026 cycle. Now, their sights are set on an impressive haul in the 2027 cycle, with a particular focus on in-state prospects.

One of the key targets is Junior Saunders, a four-star offensive tackle from Woodberry Forest, Virginia. Saunders is considered one of the best prospects in Old Dominion, and Virginia Tech is high on his list. He is scheduled to take an official visit to Blacksburg on June 5th, a significant step in his recruitment process. According to the Rivals Industry Ranking, Saunders is ranked as the 278th overall prospect and the 24th-best offensive tackle in the 2027 cycle. He is also the top-ranked recruit in Virginia.

The 6-foot-5, 290-pound Saunders has already set official visits to Virginia and South Carolina, indicating a local battle for his commitment. Despite his multiple visits to Blacksburg, Franklin has also made an impression on the recruit. With no decision imminent, Virginia Tech is determined to maintain its momentum and compete against the Cavaliers, Gamecocks, and other suitors.

In the 2026 cycle, the Hokies successfully signed Saunders' teammate, three-star offensive tackle Buddy Wegdam, from Woodberry Forest. The 2026 class also boasts 10 in-state signees. Additionally, Richmond Trinity Episcopal four-star wide receiver Davion Brown, Virginia Beach Green Run four-star offensive tackle Thomas Wilder, Green Run three-star cornerback Zaevion Cleveland, Manassas Patriot three-star linebacker Mathieu Lamah, and Hopewell three-star defensive lineman T-Ron Richardson are among those committing to Blacksburg. Brown expressed his excitement about representing his state and playing early under Coach Franklin, praising the coach's ability to create a winning culture and their established trust and connection.

The 2026 class experienced a remarkable rise in the Rivals Industry Team Recruiting Rankings, moving up 100 spots and ultimately finishing at No. 29. Currently, the only commit in the Hokies' 2027 class is four-star EDGE Andrew Rogers from Greensboro, North Carolina.
